Nigeria’s popular monarchs are known for
their unique style and carriage. They set themselves apart from other
monarchs in the world and are definitely in a league of their own in
terms of poise and character.
In no particular order, we bring you 8 of Nigeria’s most stylish kings:
1. The Alaafin of Oyo Empire, his imperial Majesty Oba (Dr.) Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III
The Alaafin is definitely a monarch with
unrivalled class. Oba Adeyemi III, no doubt is one of Africa’s most
powerful and most influential kings, and has lived two decades and over
half a century into decades of heeding the natural call of the gods and
his people.
He is known to always move in the company of his wives all decked in the finest traditional wears that scream pure royalty.
2. Oba Fredrick Akinruntan
Oba Fredrick Akinruntan is the Olugbo of
Ugbo land and he is one monarch in Nigeria that has redefined the term
‘style’. He is the wealthiest king in Nigeria according to Forbes
with an estimated net worth of $300million.
Oba Akinruntan made his money from the
oil business. He is the founder of Obat Oil and is also into real estate
as he has exquisite buildings in choice locations in London and across
Nigeria.
He possesses an array of luxury cars in
his magnificent palace. He made history in 2012 when he emerged the
first black person to buy the 2014 model of Bentley which was made
solely for Queen Elizabeth of England in the belief that other people
would wait till 2014 to ride it.
3. The Obi Of Onitsha
The Obi of Onitsha, His Majesty lgwe
Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe is the traditional leader of Onitsha, Anambra
State, southeast Nigeria. The office of Obi is recognised by the state
and federal governments of Nigeria, and the Obi himself is serves in the
capacity of representative of the Onitsha people to the government at
state and federal levels.
Achebe is one traditional ruler who has
earned a lot of respect and loyalty from his subjects. He is the
twenty-first in a dynasty that has thrived for more than four hundred
years. He occupies an important position among the people of Onitsha and
he is personally associated with the conduct of essential aspects of
Onitsha local affairs.
Achebe is one man that has a very stylish
demeanour and his ability to attend cultural events dressed in
colourful clothes is one to be admired.
4. Oba Rilwan Akiolu
The Oba of Lagos may be the king of Lagos
but he serves as a ceremonial ruler of Lagos which is arguably the true
heart of the Nigerian nation. Oba Akiolu has no actual political power,
but is sought as a counsel or sponsor by Nigerian politicians who seek
support from the various residents of Lagos.
Oba Rilwan graces top notch social events in the city and his dressing, swagger and entourage is unmatched.
5. Dein Of Agbor
Benjamin Ikenchuku Keagborekuzi I is the
current ‘Dein of Agbor’. He was only two years and four months old after
being born in July 1977 when he was crowned king following the the
unexpected death of his father. He is currently 38 years of age and has
proven to be a wonderful leader driving far reaching reforms in Agbor.
In 2006, President Obasanjo named him
Chancellor of University of Ilorin, thus making him, at 29, the youngest
Chancellor of any university-public or private-in all of Africa. He is
known to be one of the most stylish kings around as his chains and rings
are like none other. If we had to pick a king who ruled over the empire
of ‘Swag’, it would be the great Dein.
6. Muhammad Sanusi II
Former Central Bank governor, Alhaji
Lamido Sanusi was crowned Muhammadu Sanusi II, the 14th Emir of Kano in
June 2014 after the death of his predecessor, Late Ado Bayero. Sanusi is
a highly learned individual who pushed far reaching reforms in the CBN
before he left unceremoniously.
As Emir of Kano, Sanusi has matured
gracefully into the role and now moves around with the air of a true
king. He is loved by many and when he dons a pair of sunglasses on his
amazing Northen regalia, one cannot but salute the man himself and the
power he weilds.
7. Oba Of Benin
The Oba of Benin, or Omo N’Oba, is the
Oba (king) of the Edo people and the Supreme Ruler Of The Benin Kingdom.
The current Oba was formerly known as Prince Solomon Akenzua but is
regarded as His Royal Majesty Omo n’Oba n’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo Erediauwa
I.
The Benin empire is one that spans
decades and is occupied by the present day Edo people also known as Bini
people. The Oba, usually decked in red and white attire commands untold
influence and he never parades about without a cogent reason to be in
public.
It is said that once a new Oba is
crowned, his first son will never set eyes on him again till the day he
dies. And yes, the Benin Kingdom is one of the few monarchical systems
standing where only the eldest son ascends the throne.
8. Oba Saheed Elegushi
Oba Saheed Elegushi is the youngest
monarch in Lagos State. The 39-year-old Lagos socialite was born to the
family of late (Oba) Yekini Adeniyi Elegushi, Elegushi Royal Family of
Ikateland in 1976.
Oba Saheed Ademola Elegushi is married to Olori Sekinat Aramide Elegushi and they have three children.
D’Banj with Oba Elegushi at his coronation anniversary
The admirable Oba who has a preference
for dark shades likes hanging out at the most elite parts of Lagos with
top celebrities and movers and shakers in the Lagos metropolis.
Most times, he is spotted in public with neat Yoruba traditional wears and shoes and cap to match.

Nollywood actor and producer turned
politician, Desmond Elliot has revealed politics has not changed him.
Speaking to journalists recently, the Lagos State House of Assembly
Representative said
“I really beg to be different when it comes to politics. I didn’t go in as a poor man, I didn’t go in because I don’t have money to eat, that’s why I never changed my twitter or Instagram handle. I do everything myself, nothing changed about me. I hate when people over bloat themselves. For me, service is what it’s supposed to be, that’s why from the beginning of my campaign, I never wanted any political godfather, no one is telling me I put you there, then you must do this for me. I’m eternally grateful to my party for seeing me worthy to be in that position.“I don’t have an entourage, I just have myself, my PA and my driver and most times I do the driving myself. It’s a call to service because coming from a popular stand point I’m not seeking for popularity, the aim to leave a legacy of success and real change, he added |

Popular Nollywood Afrobeat musician,
Femi Kuti in a recent interview with The Nation spoke about his
marriage to his ex-wife, Funke, and disclosed why he married her despite
his disbelief in marriage.
Femi said:
I never believed in marriage. I loved my wife, and got carried away. I am happy about the experience. We got married for a number of reasons; she left home, and many people said she had made the greatest mistake of her life; she got pregnant; and for us to have a certain status for our child; documentation and so on. There were so many reasons to get married. Now we are great friends, but probably if we had not gotten married, we probably would have still been together. When you get married, if it breaks up, you get into a very bitter street, that makes it is very difficult for people to make up afterwards. Everything goes bitter around you, and hatred comes in. And when hatred comes, you find that many couples can no longer stand each other. |
