KANO TO JOIN HANDS WITH FG TO BUILD LEATHER CLUSTER IN KANO – GANDUJE ASSURES
Kano
state government has expressed willingness to release N2.5 billion as
its counterpart funding for the establishment of a world class Leather
Training Centre at Tiga, in Bebeji local government area of the state.
The
state governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje gave the assurance on
Thursday when a committee set up by the federal government, through
SMEDAN on developing the Industrial Development Centre, Tiga to a world
class Leather Cluster Park and Training Centre briefed him on the
project.
He
assured that the state government’s 40 percent contribution to the
project would be released if the Federal Government approves its take
off, appealing to the government not to allow the dream to die in view
of its economic importance.
The
governor pointed out that there is a public building at Tiga that can
easily be converted to the centre, noting that the state is best site to
locate the project in view of its leather potential and huge
population.
Governor
Ganduje explained that Kano has the largest tannery not only in Nigeria
but in the whole of West Africa, adding that already, local
entrepreneurs in the state have gone far in leather production and
business.
Earlier,
Chairman of the committee, Alhaji Ahmad Madaki said the committee
recommended for partnership between the state and federal government on
40: 60 percent counterpart agreement respectively, adding that the state
government is expected to release 25 percent on its contribution for
the take-off of the project soon, which is expected to create thousands
of jobs.
Meanwhile,
Governor Dr Ganduje has received a delegation from the Federal Ministry
of Foreign Affairs led by Ambassador Sale Pisage, who were in the state
for a one day Sensitization Workshop on ECOWAS Trade Liberalization
Scheme, in which leather entrepreneurs are participants.
The
governor told the entourage that Kano is the commercial centre of West
African as well as the most populous state in Nigeria, noting that any
workshop on trade would greatly assist the business community in the
state.
In
related development, the governor hosted seven indigenes of the state
who recently graduated from the Nigerian Defense Academy, some of who
got awards for excellent performance.
He
assured them the state government would monitor their progress to
ensure they behaved respectably and contributed positively to the
progress of their father land.
