KNSG CONSIDERS PPP FOR RAIL PROJECT - GANDUJE

KNSG CONSIDERS PPP FOR RAIL PROJECT - GANDUJE

Due to the economic crunch in the country, the Kano state government is considering Public – Private Partnership for the execution of its multi billion Naira Kano city light rail project.

The state governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, announced this during an interactive session involving members of the state executive council and the company engaged to handle the project, CCECC Nigeria Ltd., at the Government House Council Chambers in Kano.

Governor Ganduje said the project is a necessity because of the high population of Kano, even as it is gradually assuming the status of a mega city, explaining that the rail will provide a high speed, convenient, eco-friendly and safe mode of transportation for the teeming commuters.

“Kano has come of age. We cannot move in the direction of large shanty city. Lagos, Port Harcourt, Abuja, Kaduna and even Ogun are using the mass rail. Kano must join the league because we have a bigger city and larger population”, the governor argued.

Recalling that the state government has signed an MOU with CCECC Nigeria Ltd. for implementation of the city rail project, he appealed for the support of the people of Kano to make the project a reality and move the state to the next level of development.

Kano state government had recently inaugurated an Urban Mass Transit Committee, to among other things, assess the state urban transportation master plan, review all instruments for implementation of sustainable urban mass transit and identify development partners and possible funding options for success implementation of the proposed mass transit scheme.

Shedding light on the technical details of the work, the Managing Director, CCECC, Mr. Li Qing Yong explained that the project, which would be executed in four lots, covers 76.4 km and entails 35 stations, 36.4 km of railway bridges, 25 pedestrian overpasses and 10 road bridges among others.

“During the period of construction, 3,000 direct job opportunities and another 4, 000 – 6, 000 indirect job opportunities would be created. After completion, training, operation, maintenance and management of the Kano rail will provide more than 1, 00 permanent jobs as well”, he added.
