RIWAMA
Boss, Felix Obuah Warns Against Dumping Of Waste In Drainage Channels
The Sole Administrator of Rivers
State Waste Management Agency, Bro Felix Obuah has warned contractors, property
builders and developers in the State against dumping of what he described as
building wastes in the drainage channels.
He observed that silting of
Building Wastes in drainage channels, largely contributed to blocking of
gutters and waterways, which resultant effect is the flooding in some parts of
the capital city, Port Harcourt, witnessed during heavy downpour.
Bro Obuah regretted that Building
Wastes, which include wastes produced from construction, alteration, repair or
demolitions of any structure are in most cases deposited in nearby gutters and
waterways.
Most worrisome, according to the
Sole Administrator, is the fact that these wastes are carried by rain water and
deposited on roads and streets in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State Capital and
its environs, after each downpour, thereby obstructing movement and becoming an
eye sour, as well as causing health hazards to residents of the areas.
The RIWAMA Boss therefore, called
for attitudinal change on the part of builders and contractors, appealing that
all building wastes generated are properly handled and disposed of at approved
receptacles at the various areas of the city and environs.
