My Take on the Kogi Quagmire

INEC has shown that it is not an independent and impartial body in the ongoing political quagmire in Kogi State, following the death of Abubakar Audu who was leading in the inconclusive governorship election. The decision of the electoral umpire to go ahead with a supplementary election with a new candidate from the APC is outlandish. I am also gravely worried by the inglorious role of the new Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami in this Kogi quagmire. How does it sound to say that the votes obtained by late Audu would be automatically transferred to the new APC candidate who was not a part of the inconclusive election? This is absurd.
INEC ought to have subjected the crisis to proper legal analysis before coming up with a decision. This decision has shown that INEC, as presently constituted, cannot act as an impartial umpire in any election in this country. This is a dangerous trend. For me, the proper thing is to conduct a fresh governorship election in Kogi State. INEC’s decision to go ahead with the supplementary election should be challenged in court by the parties that took part in the November 21 election.
