The right time to stand up against tyranny is at its infancy. This is
the time for lovers of freedom, democracy and the rule of law to stand
up against the emerging tyranny of President Muhammadu Buhari. We must
do this swiftly before it gets out of hand. A clear example of Buhari’s
tyranny is the siege laid to the Asokoro residence of the former
National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Mohammed Dasuki (rtd) by
operatives of the State Security Services in spite of the bail granted
him by the court. It is so sad that our so-called human rights activists
are nowhere to be found. The only man standing now is Ebun Adegboruwa. I
am not saying that Dasuki is guilty or not. But the rule of law must be
respected at all times. Buhari and his new Attorney-General of the
Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami have showed no
respect for the rule of law in this case against Dasuki.
They are simply subjecting our courts to ridicule. Malami even failed
to appear before the Federal High Court in Abuja to shed light on why
the federal government bluntly refused to allow the execution of the
court order which permitted Dasuki to travel abroad for medical
treatment. Instead of the appearance of the AGF, the Director of Public
Prosecution of the Federation, Mohammed Saidu Diri came to court with a
fresh motion on notice requesting for revocation of the bail granted the
ex-NSA in the unlawful possession of firearms and money laundering
charges brought against him. This is preposterous. A government that
showed no respect for the court is now asking for the same court’s
backing for an unconstitutional request.
