GANDUJE LAMENTS INCREASING CASES OF DRUG ABUSE IN KANO

Kano state governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has expressed dismay over the high prevalence of drug abuse in the state, saying more worrisome is the fact that even girls and older females engage in the distasteful behavior.

Dr. Ganduje, who stated this while during a meeting with the State Task Force on Counterfeit Drugs and Unwholesome Processed Foods in his office, described the situation as very unfortunate pointing out that the state government would not close its eyes to such situation.

The governor, therefore, charged the Task Force to double its commitment assuring that the state government would give it the desired support and encouragement to function more efficiently.

He assured that the government would convene a meeting with security agencies and other relevant stakeholders to map out strategies against buyers and sellers of illicit drugs in the state.

Earlier, the chairman of the Task Force, Malam Abdullahi Umar who shed more light on its activities explained that it has succeeded in raiding 30 warehouses of illicit drugs and confiscated drugs worth billions of Naira.

He, however, said the Task Force’s activities are being handicapped by weak laws pertaining drug abuse, advising that the government should write to the National Council on Health, seeking review of drug related laws.

Malam Abdullahi Umar also appealed to the state government to provide the Task Force with more vehicles, establish additional drug rehabilitation centers and to take steps against the continued existence of the open drugs market at Sabon Gari, in the state capital.
