Kano state government plans to set up a Poultry Cluster with enabling infrastructural facilities in the state as part of strategic initiative to make the state the leading center of poultry and egg production in the country.

The state governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje disclosed this today (Tuesday) while declaring open the 16th Annual conference of Nigeria Association of Agricultural Economics, NAAE, at Kano University of Science and Technology, Wudil on adding that adequate electricity and potable water would be provided to attract investors.

In addition, he assured that modern laboratories, poultry slaughters and security would be provided so that whoever has capital, managerial ability and intention to invest in the poultry business in Kano can do so without major worry.

The governor also stated that his administration would soon send 100 Fulani herdsmen to Turkey for training on artificial insemination as part of efforts to revamp agriculture in the state.

“Very soon, soft loans, facilitated through the CBN, would be given to our rice farmers to encourage local production while the state owned fertilizer company is being revived to provide adequate fertilizer to farmers” Governor Ganduje emphasized.

On the conference, he said: “This conference has come at a time when the administration of President Buhari is demonstrating commitment to diversify the economy by according priority to agriculture, in the face of dwindling oil revenue”.

Thus, he expressed optimism that the conference would come up with a blueprint for the state and Federal governments to harness the vast agricultural resources in the country for food security, job creation and economic progress.

In his remarks, the President of the Nigerian Association of Agricultural Economist, NAAE, Professor Bola Peter Okuneye hoped that the conference, tagged “Agricultural Projects and National Development”, would consolidate previous efforts aimed at transforming the agricultural sector of the country.

Highlights of the conference include induction of some individuals as fellows of NAAE, including the Vice Chancellor, Kano University of Technology, Prof. Shehu Musa Alhaji.
