TIGA AND CHALLAWA IPP ON COURSE – GANDUJE
Governor
Abdullahi Umar Ganduje of Kano state has observed that the Tiga and
Challawa Gorge dams Independent Power Projects, being executed by the
state government, are viable legacies that would make life better for
the citizens.
The
governor, who noted that the two projects have reached appreciable
level of execution, said on completion, Kano would have improved energy
to resuscitate industries and provide jobs to the teeming youth in the
state.
According
to him, “the major problem of emerging cities like Kano, which has a
very large population, is unemployment. Adequate and stable power supply
would, therefore, help our industries to be revived and in turn provide
jobs to, particularly, the youth”.
He
made the assertion while receiving the Federal Inter-Ministerial team
on Harmonization of Power projects and Irrigation schemes at Tiga and
Challawa Gorge dams in the state.
Describing
the two dams as results of the foresight of the first Administrator of
the state, late Alhaji Audu Bako, the governor expressed delight that
the Federal Government has agreed to execute an irrigation project
adjoining the Challawa dam for the benefit of its neighboring
communities.
Dr.
Ganduje, however, appealed to the government to resuscitate the
abandoned Karfi Irrigation Project in the state, which was started under
the Obasanjo administration but was abandoned halfway through, pointing
out that irrigation had the potential to greatly reduce rural – urban
migration.
The
governor dwelt on the need to regularize the state IPP and irrigation
projects around the dams, to avoid creating ecological problems since
both projects need water, assuring that the state government would work
intimately with the Federal team to achieve the desired goals.
The
leader of the delegation and Director of Dams, Federal Ministry of
Water Resources, Mr. R. O Ikpeawujo said the visit is to assess the Kano
IPP and to work with the state government towards its actualization on
schedule.
