12 Things About Professor Elizabeth Nneka Anionwu, A British-Nigerian Nurse Honoured By The Queen Of England Posted: 09 Mar 2017 08:00 AM PST Professor Elizabeth Nneka Anionwu, DBE FRCN a British-born Nigerian nurse, health visitor and tutor was recently honoured with a Damehood by the Queen of England for her services to nursing in the United Kingdom and the Mary Seacole Statue Appeal. Stargist.com presents you with 12 things about this phenomenal woman. See below: 1. Professor Elizabeth Anionwu was born Elizabeth Mary Furlong in Birmingham, United Kingdom on July 2nd 1947. 2. She is of Irish and Nigerian descent heritage. Her father, Lawrence Odiatu Victor Anionwu,  a barrister from Onitsha got her mother, Mary Furlong pregnant when she was just 20 while they were in school in UK. 3.Her early life was marked by racism and the stigma of illegitimacy. For much of her childhood she was cared for by nuns, including several years in the Nazareth House convent in Birmingham. 4. She began her nursing career at a very young age after being inspired by a nun who cared for her eczema. At the age of 16, she started to work as a school nurse assistant in Wolverhampton. 5. She finally met her father in June 1972, just a couple of weeks before her 25th birthday. 6. In 1979, she helped to establish the first UK Sickle & Thalassaemia Screening and Counselling Centre and awarded a CBE for services to nursing in 2001.She also helped create the Mary Seacole Centre for Nursing Practice at the University of West London. 7. In 2004 she was presented with the Royal College of Nursing Fellowship (FRCN) for her work in the development of nurse-led sickle cell and thalassaemia counselling services and education and leadership in transcultural nursing. 8. Elizabeth Anionwu is an Emeritus Professor of Nursing at the University of West London, Vice-Chairperson of the Mary Seacole Memorial Statue Appeal and a Patron of the Sickle Cell Society as well as the Sickle and Thalassaemia Association of Nurses, Midwives & Associated Professionals (STANMAP). 9. She is the author of A short history of Mary Seacole published in 2005 by the Royal College of Nursing & a co-author of Mary Seacole: global nurse extraordinaire, Journal of Advanced Nursing, 2014. 10.She retired in 2007. 11. Anionwu has one daughter, Azuka Oforka, who is an actress in the BBC TV series ‘Casualty’. 12. She met the Queen of England on the 23rd of February, 2017 and was honoured with one of the highest national honours, Dame Commander of the Order of the British Emprire. SG’s Exclusive Interview: “I Wish I Was Married” – Serial Woman Pleaser, Efa Iwara Posted: 09 Mar 2017 06:30 AM PST Cross River State born rapper, song writer, actor and serial woman pleaser, Efa Iwara also known for his role as ‘David’ in MTV Shuga  disclosed why he ventured into the entertainment industry , his first ever movie role and his take on domestic violence in an exclusive interview with Stargist.com. Read below; SG: Where are you from? Efa: I am from Ugep, Cross River State. I was born and raised in Ibadan. SG: What Schools did you attend? Efa: International School, Ibadan and I studied Geography in University Of Ibadan. SG: How come you ventured into entertainment? Efa: Entertainment seemed like more..like there’s so much to be achieved. I enjoy entertaining people with music and acting. SG: When did you start music officially? Efa: I started music officially in 2011 SG: Was your role in MTV Shuga your first? Efa: No, it wasn’t. Tinsel – It was a 24-hour role though. I was a moderator in a debate between Tosyn Bucknor and Chuks. SG: What inspired your recent song with Wofaifada, ‘Obandi’ ? Efa: It’s a love song. Wofai played my wife in the video which was because we are both from the same place in Cross River State, she could fully understand the context of the video plus she is really pretty. SG: Are you working on any project presently? Efa: Not exactly. I starred in a new TV series on EbonylifeTV, ‘Life 101‘ which premiered on March,1, 2017 and I am currently working on a new project, I hope to drop before the end of the second quarter of the year. SG: How do you balance work and private life? Efa: Not very well. My friends will tell you that i don’t share them equally. I work most of the time  and a lot of personal relationships have suffered because of this. It’s a work in progress. I hope to improve. SG: Are you married? Efa: [Chuckles] I wish I was. SG: If you had to chose between music and acting, which would you stick with? Efa: I am sorry I can’t. How can you ask a man to chose between two wives or rather, two children? I can’t see myself doing one without the other. Even when I am not on set & with friends, I act for the fun… both provide two different outlets. SG: Who are your mentors in the entertainment industry? Efa: Music, I’d say MI, Naeto C and 2 Baba are my mentors. Acting wise, Pete Edochie.   SG: Have you had any embarrassing encounter with a fan? Efa: I can’t really think of one. If this counts as embarrassing, at a red carpet event sometime ago, someone actually mistook me for Praiz SG: What do you think of the Nigerian movie Industry? Heritage Bank Reacts To Alibaba’s Alleged Wife Suspension Posted: 09 Mar 2017 06:00 AM PST The management of Heritage Bank of Nigeria has refuted claims that one of her Executive Directors, Mary Akpobome, wife of popular Nigerian comedian Ali Baba, was on an indefinite suspension . Her position as an executive director at the bank was said to be threatened as she had been placed on an indefinite suspension in order to go and recover loans she signed off without following due process as reported by Sahara Reporters. But according to a statement by the bank’s media representatives, Mrs. Akpobome remains a valued Executive Director at the bank and was not involved in any case of fraud. The bank statement read: “Our attention has yet again been drawn to an online news story on SaharaReporters.com titled, “Heritage Bank sends Ali Baba’s Wife on Loan –Recovery Suspension”. ” The Management, categorically refutes these claims and hereby state clearly that Mrs Mary Akpobome remains a valued Executive Director of the Bank. “We strongly disclaim all allegations made on the news blog that Mrs Akpobome or any other member of our Board and Management have in any way engaged in any fraud whatsoever. “Financial institutions have credit policies governing its processes and management. These policies are designed and enforced to ensure efficiency and effectiveness in the entire credit chain. “Heritage Bank has never been controlled by any one individual or “powerful” individual(s) as deceitfully stated by Sahara Reporters. H-I Idibia who has been living in Woodbridge, Virginia for years now with his family made the announcement. “I’ve just been denied entry into the United states.. #frustrated #stranded”, HI-Idibia cried out. Recall that recently,  the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, advised Nigerians who have no compelling or urgent reason to travel to the US to postpone their travel plans until the new administration’s policy on immigration is clear.  Dabiri-Erewa said that the warning became imperative due to series of reports her office has received in recent times .
