The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Gabriel Abayomi Olonisakin has maintained that the current trend in modern warfare has necessitated the need for joint operations training and planning among members of the Armed Forces. The CDS made this assertion at the opening ceremony of the Advance Joint Operations Planning Course at Defence Intelligence Agency Training School, Karu, Abuja.
General Olonisakin
pointed out that the Armed Forces of Nigeria had been involved in a
number of joint operations in various parts of the country which had
recorded some level of successes in the past few years. This
notwithstanding, he noted that the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) reviewed
some past and ongoing operations and identified some gaps in the
planning and execution of such operations that call for reappraisal to
make them success-driven.
The CDS stated that
the course would not only enhance the understanding of participants in
all the processes required for a successful mission planning and
execution of joint operations but would sharpen the skill required for
vertical and horizontal integration of plans during the execution of
joint operations.
The Defence Chief, who
was represented by the Chief of Administration at the Defence
Headquarters, Rear Admiral Adebowale Dacosta, used the occasion to thank
the sponsor, the British Military and Advisory Team (BMATT) for the
training cooperation between Nigeria and Britain. He urged the BMATT
not to relent in its noble efforts at impacting the requisite knowledge
on the participants who were drawn from the 3 arms of the Armed Forces
of Nigeria.
