Talk about turning the tables. A woman by the name of Noela Rukundo from Melbourne, Australia, who was presumed dead, showed up to her own funeral- very much alive and ready to serve justice to the husband who tried to have her killed.
A few days earlier, Balenga Kalala had hired a team of hitmen to kill his wife of 10 years, offering them a few thousands dollars to carry out the murder because he thought she would leave him for another man. Little did he know that they didn’t kill Rukundo. With the help of a pastor and Rukundo’s moxie, she was able to return to Melbourne unharmed and reveal that she was alive all along. She showed up at the end of the funeral service, shocking her scheming husband, The Washington Post reports.
“Is it my eyes? Is it a ghost?” she remembered him saying when she emerged from her vehicle as the last few mourners left the area. He told family and friends that his wife died in a tragic accident. “Surprise! I’m still alive!” she said.
According to The Post, Kalala, who is a refugee from the Democratic Republic of Congo, “had fled a rebel army that had ransacked his village, killing his wife and young son” before coming to Australia and meeting Rukundo at a resettlement agency 11 years ago. Last year was when things started to unfold. Kalala tried to get someone to shoot her outside of her hotel room after going to her stepmother’s funeral service. They told her not to scream before blindfolding her and leading her into a car.
The hitmen told her exactly what was going on and how her husband wanted her dead; they even played her the recordings which detailed exactly how he wanted the murder carried out. However, the hitmen didn’t believe in killing women, and also knew her brother. She was kept alive to reportedly “tell other stupid women like you what happened.” They kept his money and gave Rukundo “a mobile phone, recordings of their phone conversations with Kalala, and receipts for the $7,000 in Australian dollars they allegedly received in payment,” says Australia’s The Age. After Kalala admitted his involvement in a phone conversation recorded by the police, he was sentenced to nine years behind bars for incitement to murder. Rukundo is now forced to raise eight children alone, and is working to move to a different home with the help of the Department of Human Services.

“I will stand up like a strong woman,” she said. “My situation, my past life? That is gone. I’m starting a new life now.”
