Olasupo, CAN President
The leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria in the north is currently meeting in Jos over the unending killings of Christians in the northern part of the country by some people believed to be extremist Muslims.
Following the killing of eight Christians in Talata-Mafara in Zamfara State and a Pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Luka Ubangari, by suspected Fulani herdsmen in Unguwan Anjo in Kaduna State, an emergency meeting of the Executive Committee has begun Thursday at the COCIN Headquarters in Jos, the Plateau state capital.
The meeting, according to Rev John Hayab, is the authentic Northern CAN assembly called to address the issue and not the one being reported by a section of the media to hold in Maiduguri, Borno state capital.
His words; "The Northern CAN EC is on-going at the COCIN headquarters here in Jos and there is no Northern CAN meeting holding in Maiduguri or anywhere else as being reported by a section of the media. Our meeting is holding here in Jos. All our leaders are here discussing about the insecurity of our members in the country especially here in the North."
He asked the media and members of the public to ignore the so-called CAN meeting purportedly scheduled for Maiduguri Friday.
"All the leaders of the Northern CAN are here and we would issue a communique after the meeting tomorrow (Friday). As far as we know, there is no any CAN meeting in Maiduguri tomorrow. I hope those who are sponsoring that story are not up for a mischief," he said.
Meanwhile, the CAN President, Rev Dr Olasupo Ayokunle has thrown his weight behind the Northern CAN leaders holding in Jos and was optimistic that the church in Nigeria will survive the on-going persecution.
“I am in full support of
the meeting holding in Jos by the Northern CAN Leaders, at first, it was Maiduguri that was reported by the media. .
The National CAN is in support of that meeting. We are together and those who
are killing our members will be exposed and disgraced by our God. CAN is
against the killings of our members, we are against their persecutions and
every discriminatory policy of this government in strong terms.”
