Following the recent Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), signed
between Ministry of solid Minerals and Ministry of Interior on behalf of the Nigeria
Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Commandant General, Abdullahi
Gana Muhammadu, has set up a department known as Solid Mineral Defenders where
all the Solid Mineral sites nationwide will be under their watch.
The CG pointed out that in line with the Corps mandate to
protect Critical Infrastructure and National Assets against vandals, saboteurs
and human scavengers, the helmsman
disclosed that the Ministry of Solid Mineral covered the training of personnel
to enable Officers and Men know the different mineral deposits, detect illegal
miners amongst others nationwide.
Meanwhile, the new department is under the directorate of
Critical Infrastructure and National Assets to be headed by Commandant Alpha
Ikpeamanam.
The Solid Mineral Defenders have since started operation in
different mining site across the country, and
arrests of some illegal miners have been made by the Defenders.
Appreciating the Gallant Officers and Men of the Corps, the Leader
of the Civil Defence said, '' I really appreciate
and salute my Gallant Personnel for their zeal in the discharge of their duties,
and resolute stance in ensuring that the perennial fuel scarcity and huge queues
at the different filling stations across the country have reduced drastically,
and the activities of diverting the
product has been put to a halt ''.
Muhammadu seized the opportunity to call on other Security Agencies,
noting that, we all cannot do without synergy, for meaningful success to be
made in discharging our constitutional responsibilities, cooperation and
collaboration is a must .
Abdullahi charged the Corps Personnel that they have to justify
their inclusion in the scheme of things in the country and the confidence
reposed in the Corps and its existence, as the task ahead is not an easy one.
Nevertheless, we have to work and keep working, knowing that
with the Almighty God who is our help and strength, we will surely be
successful.
