Wife of Peter Okoye, Lola Omotayo-Okoye recounts how she was molested
during the Kinabuti Dare2Dream project, encouraging and motivating
young ladies to pursue their dreams.
According to her,
“You shouldn’t let your past determine what your
destiny will be, we all have our past whether good or bad or makes us
unhappy, we all had a life that we lived that we are not happy about, you
shouldn’t let it bother you from succeeding.
When I was a young girl in my early teens in high school, I was
molested by a catholic priest, I blamed myself, I didn’t tell anyone
because I was ashamed, couldn’t tell anyone cos I felt everyone would
blame me, so I carried on the guilt and bitterness with me for years. I
was filled with hate and I became a angry person, I was rebellious, I
didn’t want to listen to
anybody and because I wanted to be expelled from school to avoid
seeing this person, I would do so many terrible things, everything
around me was just so negative, I felt I wasn’t good enough.
I felt
like a loser, so it was hard for me to focus. One day I woke up and said
I am going to change my story and I dumped that person, focus on my
education and decided to be serious and be something. I decided to get a
job and go to school full time in America.
I worked hard. My parents were sending me money cos I didn’t tell them I
was working but I was working because I wanted to be independent. I
didn’t want to depend on any man or on my parents even though they would
have done anything for me, so I did all sorts of job; I was a make up
artiste, I worked in a cafe, school library, I did so many things and I
didn’t realise that these jobs were building me up as a person,
building my resume, my confidence.
“People began to like me because I was adding value to their lives. At
work I was excellent and so was i in school and that built me as a
strong woman and at some point, I sought counseling to get over my
molestation issues where I was made to see reasons why I wasn’t at fault
cos I was a child then.
Today I
am accomplished.“Look at my husband,” she continued, “when I met
him peeps were like what are you doing with him, he has nothing but I
stood my ground and choose to stick with him cos he had a dream. He and
his twin brother did not let their dream die, they worked hard; look at
them today! I stuck by him cos he had focus and drive and today I am
happy, I have a good life, we are happy and we have got a beautiful
family. No one can make you a loser.
You can be whatever woman you want to be but you have to believe in
yourself, if they reject you today, it doesn’t mean you should let your
dreams die, you have something unique about you.”

Earlier this month, Prince Eke wife of singer, Muma Gee was kidnapped on his way back from a movie set in Asaba.
And now in an exclusive chat with Saturday Beats, the
actor said he was grateful to God that He saved him from the daredevil
kidnappers. And that he doesn’t blame Nigerians that said his kidnap was
a publicity stunt.
He said:
“I was returning from Asaba where I went for a movie shoot and I was
ambushed. Three guys just jumped out of the bush brandishing AK47 in
their hands. They began to shoot sporadically and I tried to reverse but
I saw two men with guns behind my car. From there, they took me into a
forest at gun point. I never got out of that forest until the day I was
released.
“There was a day I tried to escape but I was recaptured. I was
abducted on a Saturday and as at Monday, my abductors had not allowed me
to talk to my wife. A lot of things went through my mind because based
on what I have heard about kidnapping, the kidnappers usually call the
family of their victim to demand for ransom. In my case these men were
silent and whenever they spoke, it was in a low tone so that I wouldn’t
hear them. I thought I would be assassinated so I decided to take my
chances. I told the kidnappers that the chain they bound me with was too
tight and it was inflicting injury on me. One of them was ordered to
loosen it for me and as he unlocked the padlock used to chain me, I
pushed him off and ran into the bush. That was when I realised the
forest was so big and because it was late in the night, I had to climb a
tree. While I was running, the kidnappers shot at me. It is by the
grace of God that I am alive because they shot at me with a pump action
gun. That gun does not just release bullets; it fires pellets as well
which could harm someone.
“Although they shot at me twice, I was unharmed. While I was on
the top of the tree, as I was trying to position myself very well, I
broke a dry tree branch and this made my abductors locate me. They
pointed their gun at me and ordered me to descend from the tree. That
night, they beat me blue black. They used their rifles to beat me and
they broke my tooth in the process. They beat me for over three hours.”
“They fed me with bread and water or rice without meat in a nylon
bag. I was very scared and thought I would be killed. On Monday, some
of the kidnappers suggested that they should kill me while the others
said that they should shoot my leg. The leader of the gang said that
they should leave me but if I try to escape again they should kill me.
This is an experience I don’t wish my enemy because those boys were drug
addicts and they were smoking Indian hemp from morning till night. I
was very scared but I had faith in God that I would not die in the
forest. While I was in that forest, I had an encounter with God. This
encounter manifested the love God has for me. It is my duty to serve Him
in truth and in spirit all the rest of my life,” Eke said.
But when the news broke about
his kidnap, some online commentators felt it was a publicity stunt. When
asked, Prince Eke, said that he would never fake such an incident.
The actor said:
“I do not blame people that said my kidnap was a
publicity stunt. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I do not
wish anyone to go through what I went through. We celebrities have many
ways of being relevant but I cannot go through such length just to be in
the news. Those that say that my kidnap was stage-managed, I leave them
to their opinion. I thank my wife and my brothers and sister for their
tremendous help that got me out.”
