Kano state government has announced that it would grant amnesty to cattle rustlers who voluntarily declared their arms and expressed sincere remorse in the state.
The
governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, who made this known while
inspecting cattle and other property recovered from rustlers and paraded
at Kwanar Dawaki, by the state Police Command, declared that he had set
up a committee to consider granting amnesty to repentant rustlers who
are ready to assist government in arresting other rustlers.
“Information
available to us indicates that cattle rustlers are no longer at ease
with their illegal trade as a result of the pressure mounted against
them by security agents. That is why we considered amnesty for those who
will surrender their arms so that they can be re-integrated into the
society,” he said.
“We
will train them on skills acquisition programmes and give them jobs in
exchange for information that will lead to the arrest of other rustlers
in order to bring the problem to an end,” he stressed.
Dr.
Ganduje said his government expressed appreciation to the army, the
police and vigilante groups for their efforts in flushing out criminals
from Falgore and other forests in the state, expressing the hope that
Fulani herdsmen and local communities would continue to cooperate with
the security men to attain maximum success in their work.
The
State Commissioner of Police, Alh. Muhammad Musa Katsina, who briefed
the governor, explained that in their recent raid at Falgore forest, the
security personnel arrested about 70 suspects and recovered 524 cows,
11 camels, 134 sheep and goats, six donkeys as well as chickens.
He further disclosed that they confiscated
over 70 tones of illicit drugs worth N500 million, adding that one of
the drug barons showed apprehension and voluntarily handed over about 30
tones to Police.
