The Birth of Jesus
2 In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. 2 (This was the first census that took place while[a] Quirinius was governor of Syria.) 3 And everyone went to their own town to register.
4 So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5 He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. 6 While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7 and
she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and
placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for
them.8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,
14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”
and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”
15 When
the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to
one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has
happened, which the Lord has told us about.”
16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. 17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.21 On the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise the child, he was named Jesus, the name the angel had given him before he was conceived.

Come to think of it, why do we have to wait for Christmas to do that?”

“Christmas can be celebrated in the school

man whose birthday is being celebrated. One wonders how a teacher would answer

“In the old days, it was not called the
Holiday Season; the Christians called it 'Christmas' and went to church; the
Jews called it 'Hanukkah' and went to synagogue; the atheists went to parties
and drank. People passing each other on the street would say 'Merry Christmas!'
or 'Happy Hanukkah!' or (to the atheists) 'Look out for the wall!”

“And in
despair I bowed my head;
"There is no peace on earth," I said;

And mocks the song

the Right prevail,
With peace on earth, good-will to men!”

“There is
something about Christmas that requires a rug rat. Little kids make Christmas
fun. I wonder if could rent one for the holidays. When I was tiny we would by a
real tree and stay up late drinking hot chocolate and finding just the right
place for the special decorations. It seems like my parents gave up the magic
when I figured out the Santa lie. Maybe I shouldn't have told them I knew where
the presents really came from. It broke their hearts.
I bet they'd be divorced by now if I hadn't been born. I'm sure I was a huge disappointment. I'm not pretty or smart or athletic. I'm just like them- an ordinary drone dressed in secrets and lies. I can't believe we have to keep playacting till I graduate. It's a shame we just can't admit that we have failed at family living, sell the house, split up the money, and get on with our lives. Merry Christmas.”

“There
are many things from which I might have derived good, by which I have not
profited, I dare say,' returned the nephew. 'Christmas among the rest. But I am
sure I have always thought of Christmas time, when it has come round—apart from
the veneration due to its sacred name and origin, if anything belonging to it
can be apart from that—as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant
time; the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and
women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of
people below them as if they really were fellow-passengers to the grave, and
not another race of creatures bound on other journeys. And therefore, uncle,
though it has never put a scrap of gold or silver in my pocket, I believe that
it has done me good, and will do me good; and I say, God bless
it!”
