New Year's Eve: Millions around the world welcome 2016 with fireworks amid heightened security concerns

Millions of people around the world have welcomed the arrival of 2016 with parties and fireworks, although security concerns have disrupted celebrations in Europe and parts of Asia.
Crowds thronged to vantage points to see the displays centred on Sydney's famed harbour which drew more than 1 million people, ahead of the chimes of midnight moving across Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe and finally the Americas.
Samoa and Kiribati were the first countries to usher in 2016 followed by New Zealand which put up an impressive fireworks display, reported to be the biggest in the city's history.

Hong Kong, Beijing, Singapore and other Asian cities may rival Sydney's pyrotechnic splash, but Brunei offers a sober evening after banning Christmas in a shift to hardline Islamic law.
Jakarta remains on high alert after anti-terror police foiled detailed plans for an alleged New Year suicide attack in the Indonesian capital.
Terrorism concerns will also curb celebrations in Europe.
Paris will still hold celebrations without the display at the Champs-Elysees, but in Brussels, all public celebrations have been scrapped in the Belgian capital after the arrest of six people suspected of plotting an attack.
Brussels Mayor Yvan Mayeur said the police could not guarantee people's safety.
"Last year there were 100,000 people [and] in these circumstances we have no guarantee of checking every single person who comes to the event," he said.
"Since the investigation is not over yet, it's better not to take risks."
In Turkey, police have detained two suspects linked to Islamic State allegedly planning to stage attacks in the centre of Ankara which is expected to be packed on New Year's Eve.
Meanwhile, in Moscow police will for the first time close off Red Square where tens of thousands of revellers traditionally gather.
"It's no secret that Moscow is one of the choice targets for terrorists," Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said recently.

In Britain, Scotland Yard said there will be around 3,000 officers across central London in what is reported to be an unprecedented anti-terror security effort.
Fireworks were banned in towns and cities across Italy, in some cases because of a recent spike in air pollution but also because of fears that, in the current climate, sudden loud bangs could cause crowds to panic.
The number of police on duty in Italy has been increased by 30 per cent compared to last year although the Interior Ministry stressed: "There has been no specific alert."
In Madrid, thousands of people will flock to Puerta del Sol square, however police will limit the number allowed in to just 25,000.

Street parties in Germany, Beach bashes in Sierra Leone

Berliners will do better with about a million expected at the Brandenburg Gate for a free mega-street party.
The Egyptian government is staging celebrations in front of the pyramids near Cairo, with ambassadors, artists and intellectuals all invited.
Sierra Leone's capital Freetown is hoping to reclaim its mantle as host of the best beach parties in Africa after Ebola scared people away last year.
Celebrations away from the palm-fringed beaches will be muted, however, as people remember almost 4,000 victims of the epidemic.
Security has also been tightened in the US, most namely New York City, where around a million people gather into Times Square yearly at New Year's Eve to watch the renowned ball drop for the midnight countdown.
Pacific nations Nauru, Tuvalu and smalls portions of eastern Russia are next to usher in 2016, while the American islands of Hawaii are set to be the last.

REPENT AND GET AMNESTY – GANDUJE TELLS CATTLE RUSTLERS

Kano state government has announced that it would grant amnesty to cattle rustlers who voluntarily declared their arms and expressed sincere remorse in the state.

The governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, who made this known while inspecting cattle and other property recovered from rustlers and paraded at Kwanar Dawaki, by the state Police Command, declared that he had set up a committee to consider granting amnesty to repentant rustlers who are ready to assist government in arresting other rustlers.

“Information available to us indicates that cattle rustlers are no longer at ease with their illegal trade as a result of the pressure mounted against them by security agents. That is why we considered amnesty for those who will surrender their arms so that they can be re-integrated into the society,” he said.

“We will train them on skills acquisition programmes and give them jobs in exchange for information that will lead to the arrest of other rustlers in order to bring the problem to an end,” he stressed.

Dr. Ganduje said his government expressed appreciation to the army, the police and vigilante groups for their efforts in flushing out criminals from Falgore and other forests in the state, expressing the hope that Fulani herdsmen and local communities would continue to cooperate with the security men to attain maximum success in their work.

The State Commissioner of Police, Alh. Muhammad Musa Katsina, who briefed the governor, explained that in their recent raid at Falgore forest, the security personnel arrested about 70 suspects and recovered 524 cows, 11 camels, 134 sheep and goats, six donkeys as well as chickens.

He further disclosed that they confiscated over 70 tones of illicit drugs worth N500 million, adding that one of the drug barons showed apprehension and voluntarily handed over about 30 tones to Police.

What sort of New Year’s Resolution should a Christian make?

The practice of making New Year’s resolutions goes back over 3,000 years to the ancient Babylonians. There is just something about the start of a new year that gives us the feeling of a fresh start and a new beginning. In reality, there is no difference between December 31 and January 1. Nothing mystical occurs at midnight on December 31. The Bible does not speak for or against the concept of New Year’s resolutions. However, if a Christian determines to make a New Year’s resolution, what kind of resolution should he or she make?

Common New Year’s resolutions are commitments to quit smoking, to stop drinking, to manage money more wisely, and to spend more time with family. By far, the most common New Year’s resolution is to lose weight, in conjunction with exercising more and eating more healthily. These are all good goals to set. However, 1 Timothy 4:8 instructs us to keep exercise in perspective: “For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.” The vast majority of New Year’s resolutions, even among Christians, are in relation to physical things. This should not be.

Many Christians make New Year’s resolutions to pray more, to read the Bible every day, and to attend church more regularly. These are fantastic goals. However, these New Year’s resolutions fail just as often as the non-spiritual resolutions, because there is no power in a New Year’s resolution. Resolving to start or stop doing a certain activity has no value unless you have the proper motivation for stopping or starting that activity. For example, why do you want to read the Bible every day? Is it to honor God and grow spiritually, or is it because you have just heard that it is a good thing to do? Why do you want to lose weight? Is it to honor God with your body, or is it for vanity, to honor yourself?

Philippians 4:13 tells us, “I can do everything through Him who gives me strength.” John 15:5 declares, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” If God is the center of your New Year’s resolution, it has chance for success, depending on your commitment to it. If it is God’s will for something to be fulfilled, He will enable you to fulfill it. If a resolution is not God honoring and/or is not in agreement in God’s Word, we will not receive God’s help in fulfilling the resolution.

So, what sort of New Year’s resolution should a Christian make? Here are some suggestions: (1) pray to the Lord for wisdom (James 1:5) in regards to what resolutions, if any, He would have you make; (2) pray for wisdom as to how to fulfill the goals God gives you; (3) rely on God’s strength to help you; (4) find an accountability partner who will help you and encourage you; (5) don’t become discouraged with occasional failures; instead, allow them to motivate you further; (6) don’t become proud or vain, but give God the glory. Psalm 37:5-6 says, “Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun.”

IGP FELICITATES WITH NIGERIANS ON NEW YEAR CELEBRATION

·       Promises watertight security nationwide
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Solomon E. Arase, fdc, NPM, on behalf of the entire officers of the Nigeria Police Force, heartily felicitates with good people of Nigeria as we celebrate the New Year 2016.

Against the backdrop of security challenges in the country and the general preparation for the New Year Celebrations, the Nigeria Police High Command has urged worshippers both at Jummat and Church services to take adequate measures to reduce the number of vehicles around these hallowed worship centres.

The Force equally advises operators of Motor Parks, Shopping Malls and Recreational Centres to work very closely with the Police and other security agencies as they strive to strengthen general security in their respective facilities.

Meanwhile, to ensure a secure, peaceful and hitch-free nation-wide New Year celebration, the IGP has directed all Zonal AIGs and State Command Commissioners of Police to ensure an effective and efficient deployment of all operational manpower and tools at the disposal of their respective Commands. He has further directed the AIG Border Patrol to ensure that the nation’s borders are effectively manned to prevent any cross-border crime.

While saluting the courage and gallantry of officers of the Force for their tireless services in protecting lives and property during the year, the IGP charges Police personnel to continue to be civil in the discharge of their constitutional responsibilities. He, however, warns that officers found acting contrary to the Force’s “Vision and Mission” will be appropriately sanctioned.

The Inspector-General of Police, while wishing all Nigerians a very blissful and peaceful New Year Celebrations, assures the public of the Nigeria Police Force readiness and commitment towards ensuring a safe and secure environment.

Minus Jesus, You Can Do Nothing in 2016!

"I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing."
John 15:1-5

2016 IS OUR YEAR OF DIVINE PRESENCE AND HELP

"And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you." John 14:16-17

"Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me." Psalm 139:7-10

“Media Chat Exposed Buhari’s Undemocratic Character”- PDP

…Says President Should Apologize for Labeling Nigerians ‘Difficult Lot’

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says President Muhammadu Buhari’s responses at the Wednesday Presidential Media Chat were not only embarrassing but also further exposed his undemocratic character as an unrepentant tyrant who has no regard for the rule of law and the self-worth of Nigerian citizens.

The party, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, on Thursday also said the President confirmed his partisanship in the much-vaunted war against corruption by openly absolving his ministers and party members of corrupt practices.

“Whilst we restate our respect for the person and office of the President, we note that President Buhari bared his true colours to the world as an unrepentant tyrant. Today, the world is no longer in doubt as to who is behind the prevailing recklessness, abuse of rights of citizens and outright flouting of judicial pronouncements by security agencies.

“A situation where the President openly pronounced persons facing trial guilty and sanctioned their continued incarceration despite being granted bail by the courts, presents a dangerous fascist practice obtainable only in totalitarian societies like Mussolini’s Italy, Hitler’s Germany, Idi Amin’s Uganda and General Than Shwe’s Burma.

“This extremely shocking dictatorial tendency being brazenly exhibited by the President in total disdain for our laws and judicial institutions portends great danger for our democracy and constitutionally-guaranteed rights of the people, and should be resisted by the citizens before it festers.

"The scorn for the principle of separation of powers, especially the independence of the legislature, is further manifested in the declared craving to regulate the funding and running of the National Assembly, a matter constitutionally vested outside the jurisdiction of the executive.  We are most uncomfortable about his attempt at trying to whip up public sentiments against an independent arm of government, especially the one vested with the constitutional power of appropriation.

“Following from the foregoing, therefore, it may be necessary to suspend the application of our Constitution and allow the President to operate as maximum ruler for four years after which the nation can return to a democracy.

“On the issue of the Chibok girls, President Buhari’s embarrassing declaration of seeking information on the whereabouts and state of the girls betrays an obvious insincerity which is in total conflict with his campaign promises in that regard.  Thus by this declaration, our dear President has accepted failure on this issue and should therefore apologise to Nigerians for all the insults, abuse and aspersions cast on the past administration by himself and the leadership of his political party.

“On the issue of devaluation of the naira, there is an obvious conflict between the budget speech wherein the president stated that the government is assessing the foreign exchange rate with a view to attracting foreign investments and his categorical pronouncement during the media chat that the naira would not be devalued.  We invite Nigerians to note that the president obviously does not understand the currency that applies in the devaluation of the naira (laugh out loud).

“Furthermore, Nigerians were shocked by the President's labeling Nigerians as ‘very difficult lot’ while responding to questions on the strategy to be adopted in implementing his promised N5,000 social welfare package.

“This unhealthy portrayal of the citizens by the very father of the nation, who has remained unrelenting in de-marketing his country through unguarded statements, is indeed a great disservice to Nigeria and its international image. Consequently, we reject this negative labeling of our citizens and reiterate our confidence in them, especially the millions who remain honest, hardworking and credible.

“Finally, Nigerians must take copious note of the fact that the President gave no inspiring answers to questions pertaining to his campaign promises, the fight against insurgency and rescue of the Chibok girls, the poor state of the naira, sudden plunging of the economy under his watch, and the gradual loss of democratic rights and freedom.”

Chief Olisa Metuh
National Publicity Secretary

Open Letter to Presidential Spokesperson, Femi Adesina

Dear Mr. Femi Adesina

Since I am a victim of association to one of the most vilified and scandalised Nigerians through media trial, this Open Letter is the best opportunity for me to put some issues in proper perspective following some of your public remarks about your old friend.

As you are aware, I have been actively involved in cementing relationship between the media and security agencies in the recent past. Immediately after my premature retirement from the public service by the Jonathan administration, I was invited by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), under Col. Sambo Dasuki (retired), to help in changing the negative media narrative on Nigeria’s counter-terrorism campaigns. It was at a period when the Boko Haram was having the upper hand in the propaganda campaign of the war against Nigeria with a section of the foreign media castigating Nigerian troops as “cowardly” “undisciplined” and “ill-trained.”

Among other things, I have the responsibility of consulting for the Forum of Spokespersons of Security and Response Agencies (FOSSRA), then Chaired by Major General Chris Olukolade, which has membership from critical public institutions including the military, security, intelligence and response agencies. We also created and sustained web portals for providing accurate and timely information to the public.

I must commend Mr. Femi Adesina for playing greater roles on the success of our campaign because as the President of Nigerian Guild of Editors, you also encouraged Editors to support our activities through occasional self-censorship to manage negative terrorists’ propaganda.

Being one of the closest Editors to former National Security Adviser, you were always sincere and frank when you met and discussed with Dasuki. You never hid your hardened support for the candidacy of General Buhari of All Progressive Congress (APC). I remember your annoyance over security clampdown on the media and when you sought Dasuki’s intervention for compensation for media organisations over their loss rather than engaging in prolonged court cases. I was with you on that occasion in his office.

Apart from interfacing between FOSSRA and media representatives at different levels and locations, which you encouraged, Sambo Dasuki too, as National Security Adviser occasionally hosted Media Debriefing sessions where sensitive information was disseminated with supported photos and video clips. Many of such sessions were classified, not for publication, where atrocities of terrorists; the gallantry of the Nigerian troops and sophisticated equipment deployed for counter-terrorism operations were disclosed or shown.

I am glad that not only were you adequately informed of those success stories of Jonathan administration’s war on terror, you even took the pain to pen an opinion article eulogising Dasuki for keeping to his promise of clearing all known terrorists’ camps before the handover to the new government.

As a respected columnist, your article of May 1, 2015 on the back page of the Daily Sun with the title “A little Late But Not too Late,” clearly exonerates Dasuki from some allegations and also reveals some concrete facts of achievements that were not being reported in the media.

It is therefore, baffling that the same Femi Adesina, could brazenly contradict himself shortly after gaining public office in his official statements. Some of us who know your cordial relationship with Dasuki and information at your disposal are indeed baffled by your dramatic turn-around in so short a time.

Meanwhile, it is necessary to point out that not all funds in ONSA are meant for arms procurement. As you are aware, under its Special Service Office (SSO), funds are expended on training, espionage, communication, special interventions for special causes including NGOs. One of the successful programmes under ONSA is Soft-Approach to countering terrorism, of which deradicalization without the use of force through economic empowerment, education, communication, rehabilitation and counselling were part. The Presidential Initiative on North-East (PINE) was conceived from the Soft Approach.

As a media consultant who has distributed over 1000 releases on behalf of the military and security agencies, I can state the following as a fact from official documents and releases:

On August 6, 2015, through PRNigeria, Dasuki named and provided pictures of sophisticated weapons bought for the military, which included: “Alpha jets, Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) APCs, Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles, advanced artillery pieces, assorted arms and ammunitions, highly sophisticated surveillance drones, T72 Battle Tanks and modification of F7 supersonic jet fighters." Even in his official response to your statement against him on November 18, 2015, Dasuki mentioned official acknowledgements of delivery of some of the equipment by the security chiefs.

It is therefore laughable when critics claim that no weapons were purchased when a video from Boko Haram leader Shekau displayed captured sophisticated weapons after alleged mutinous soldiers fled Baga

At the twilight of Jonathan’s administration more than 22 towns in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states were recovered and confirmed with video and pictorial evidences through military press releases. Some of the towns recovered before the coming of President Buhari included: Abadam, Askira, Baga, Bama, Biu, Buni Yadi, Damboa, Goniri, Gujba, Gulani, Gwoza, Hong, Konduga, Kukawa, Marte, Madagali, Michika, Monguno, Mubi, and others. A clear testimony to some of the accomplishments was the official DHQ release dated March 16, 2015 with reference No: DHQ/ABJ/901/32/DDI and a title: “Troops Finally Rout Terrorists from Bama and Last Stronghold in Yobe.”

Even though when you confirmed in the same article while you were still a columnist that “Sambisa Forest is falling” it was actually stormed by Nigerian troops where about 300 kidnapped women and children were rescued with video evidence before the emergence of the current administration.

In an attempt to indict Sambo Dasuki, some media leak unethically expose expenditures of sensitive agencies like National Intelligence Agency, Department of State Service and others to public ridicules. This is unfair. It was for sensitive nature of issues that we guarded the recruitment of Special M Forces to help in the air while Nigerian troops recaptured the ground. Some would rather call our technical Advisers as South-African mercenaries. Even when Nigeria financially supported some neigbouring countries to participate in the Multi-National Joint Taskforce (MNJTF) it was deliberately done because they were initially reluctant as foreign powers were not helping Nigerian troops.

Since Dasuki and others are now being arraigned in court, rather than the continued media trial and planned secret trials, let the trial commence in open court to enable prosecutors and accusers  present their arguments to remove facts from fictions and reality from illusions.

Sir, as you know that I have tremendous respect for you, I strongly urge you to use your good office to protect the integrity of critical institutions like security and the media from public ridicule as some patriotic officers, media organisations, and publishers are already being indicted without fair trial in the court of law.

While I vouch for your professional integrity, you know for a fact that Dasuki is kind and obediently loyal in and out of office. You know that for sure, Mr. Femi.

As we end 2015, I pray the year 2016 will not be one of media circus but one in which the rule of law will determine official actions and suspects of all kinds will have their rights under the constitution respected. This is my last article on this issue and I do this with the best of intention to protect our institutions.

NO RECRUITMENT SCAM IN NSCDC...SAYS GANA

The Management of Nigeria Security Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) is worried by rumours peddled in some quarters that the Corps Top notch and management staff are emeshed in recruitment scam over slot sharing which has created ill feelings in their midst.

It is pertinent to note that at the moment the Corps does not have Deputy Commandants General. So who are the substantive DCGs that are having rift with the Commandant General?.

The Commandant General, Abdullahi Gana Muhammadu, who is surprised at this negative development says  no rift exits within the Corps. According to him, "We are all working together as one family, in the NSCDC irrespective of religion and tribe, we are one big happy family".

Gana further stated that there is no recruitment or replacement going on in the Service talkless of rift between the Top echelon of the Agency. It is all figment of imagination

However, it is true that the Corps needs more personnel in order to meet up with the present demand, especially in the execution of the constitutional mandate and to that effect, request for recruitment of more personnel come 2016, is in process .

However this request has been misconstrued by several persons and without waiting for it to come to fruition chose the path of slander.  Wrong signal was sent all along making people to believe that recruitment or whatever they term replacement is going on in the organization.

Abdullahi is therefore, calling on all meaningful applicants nationwide to disregard the rumours of recruitment in order not to fall prey to the gimmick of employment scammers.  The NSCDC have therefore, worked out modalities that the moment approval is fully granted, advertisement will be placed in the national dailies and in the electronic media to enable applicants know the criteria to be used.  Therefore, every online application, text messages, facebook  , twitter and any other social media platform used to cunningly extort innocent applicants should be totally disregarded.

He reiterated that, having made this information known to the populace in general , any unsuspecting applicant who falls prey having failed to heed this warning should not blame the NSCDC.

Meanwhile, the Commandant General has frowned at the incident reported in both the Guardian and Punch Newspapers of December 30th, 2015, on the purported release of a petroleum bunkerer in Ogba, Lagos , by the NSCDC Lagos State Command, and has therefore, directed the Lagos State Corps Commandant to thoroughly investigate the issue of the release of the said oil bunkerer and report back to him immediately.
