A PDP Chieftain and three-time gubernatorial aspirant in Adamawa State, Dr. Umar Ardo, has stated that the quarrel between former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar and his then principal, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo started since September 2001, adding that the feud was mainly responsible for the ill-fated third term debacle.
He made this clarification at the review of a book titled: “Long Walk of the Progress in Nigeria: Political Cases in Perspective” written by Barrister Sylvester Imhanobe, a Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Research and Special Projects.
He spoke while debunking the author’s assertion that; “Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, GCON, as Vice President opposed President Obasanjo’s third term agenda. Most Nigerians believe, rightly or wrongly, that the face-off between Obasanjo and Atiku in the buildup to the 2007 presidential election is as a result of Atiku’s opposition to Obasanjo’s third term agenda”.

Ardo went on to state that Imhanobe was wrong in imputing that Atiku was fighting Obasanjo because of the latter’s attempt to perpetuate himself in office through the third term agenda.
According to him, “Nothing could be further from the truth! In fact, the reverse is the case; i.e. the 3rd term crisis was a fallout of the Atiku-Obasanjo fight which started since September, 2001. Indeed, I can evidently state that without this fight in the first place, there would not have been the 3rd term debacle.”
The book, written to celebrate the victory of Buhari in the 2015 presidential election, had Ardo as the reviewer while the former National Chairman of the Peoples’ Democratic Movement, PDM, Alhaji Bashir Ibrahim Yusuf, was the chairman with the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malamin, SAN, as the Chief Host of the occasion.
