What Buhari Tells Northern CAN

REMARKS BY HIS EXCELLENCY, MUHAMMADU BUHARI, PRESIDENT OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA, DURING HIS AUDIENCE WITH MEMBERS OF THE CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA (CAN) FROM 19 NORTHERN STATES AND ABUJA, THURSDAY, JULY 5, 2018

I thank you very much for taking the time to pay this visit today and for the issues you have raised.

The recent killings in Benue, Zamfara and lately Plateau are wicked, condemnable and completely unacceptable acts.

We, Nigerians, are religious people and no religion or culture accepts the killing of people for any reason whatsoever.

This is why we must all rise as one to condemn these vile and wicked acts to ensure that all the culprits are brought to justice.

We owe it to the memory of those who lost their lives in the violence in Plateau, Benue, Nasarawa, Taraba, Zamfara and elsewhere since 1999 to bring the conflicts to a decisive end. I assure you that we will do this.

Let me make it clear that even a single life lost in any part of the country is one too many. I came to office vowing to ensure the protection of lives and property, and I remain committed to this despite the challenges we have experienced.

I, therefore, seek your support as clerics and religious leaders to join hands with this administration and give us your full support. As you all know, deploying law enforcement agencies is fully our responsibility as a government while creating the platform and mechanisms for dialogue is a collective effort.

The military and police have arrested hundreds of suspects across the various flash-points in the region and several prosecutions are going on. In a number of cases, we have seen convictions. Nigerians are right when they say they want to see more convictions and I would like to appeal to the judiciary to help us fast-track these cases.

When some, for clearly political purposes, attempt to suggest that this government is doing nothing about the killings, and that I, being Fulani, must be encouraging these satanic acts, it seems to me that there is no limit to the evil in the minds of men.

Otherwise, how can anyone in their right minds suggest that I, as an elected President even with substantial votes in the affected areas, will for any reason do harm by an act of omission to those same people?

Secondly, the problems in all these areas, as you all know, are historical. There is no administration that has not had to contend with killings in these same areas over the years.

Indeed, in 2001, you may recall that after thousands were killed in Plateau State, a State of Emergency was declared and a Governor was replaced by an Administrator.

To suggest that our Administration is doing nothing is terribly unfair.

We must not forget that the same Plateau State which has been crisis-ridden for years has in the past three years been celebrated for its peacefulness. The Governor’s hard work for peace and the presence of the military’s Operation Safe Haven must have had some impact.

In recent weeks, we have beefed up its strength with the deployment of extra Special Forces from the Defence headquarters.

Besides, we currently have no fewer than three special military intervention forces in the troubled zones.

Operation Safe Haven to secure Plateau State, Operation Whirl Stroke 1 (OPWS) to secure Benue, Taraba and Nasarawa and OPWS 2 to secure Zamfara and Kaduna States.

These forces are supported with investigative and intelligence gathering capabilities from the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services and other agencies.

Government can achieve lasting peace only with the sincere and active cooperation of communities, religious leaders, youths and other stakeholders.

These include the Media in whose hands lies the power to frame, shape the perspectives and narratives which influence the thinking of millions of people within and outside Nigeria.

Finally, let us collectively shame those who are stoking the fires of ethnic  and religious conflicts for their short-term political gains.

This country belongs equally to Christians and Muslims and even those who claim ignorance of God.

Buhati Must Stop Ethnic Cleansing, Land Grabbing and Genocide in Nigeria - Northern CAN

TEXT OF SPEECH BY THE CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA (CAN) NORTHERN STATES PRESENTED BY THE CHAIRMAN REV. YAKUBU PAM DURING A COURTESY VISIT ON THE PRESIDENT, FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA, PRESIDENT MUHAMMADU BUHARI, GCFR BY THE EXECUTIVE OF CAN NORTHERN STATES AND THE CHURCH’S DENOMINATIONAL HEADS  ON 5th JULY 2018 AT THE PRESIDENTIAL VILLA, ABUJA

We are the Executive Members of the 19 Northern States and the FCT of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN. This visit is our second to the Villa since you assumed office as the President. We are indeed pleased for granting us audience each time we have expressed the need to visit you and are appreciative of the appointment and role of the Secretary to Government of the Federation in this regard.
Mr President, Sir, as the Chief Custodian of the security of our nation,we  have come to you with tears on our faces because of the renewed attacks on innocent Nigerians especially in Northern Nigeria and in particular Christians in the north of the country where hundreds of persons mostly children, women and the aged have been maimed and killed in night raids by armed herdsmen, a sad development which has compelled our cry to you in this visit in order to call on you to deploy all at your disposal as a government to halt this senseless blood shedding and massive destruction of lives and property in the land, a situation which could lead to a state of anarchy leading to an unpredictable future.
We are particularly worried at the widespread of insecurity in the country where wanton attacks and killings by armed men identified in various instances as Fulani herdsmen, who have turned bandits now terrorising communities almost on a daily bases and unchallenged despite the huge investments by your government to strengthen the security agencies.  Sir, the perpetrators should not be allowed to go scot free. We demand justice for all, no matter the religion, creed, tribe or region of the assailants because of the sanctity of life. It is even more worrisome that these huge numbers of needless deaths in 2018 alone have been recorded in various attacks, especially in the northern states of Benue, Plateau, Taraba, Adamawa, Kaduna, Kwara, Borno, Zamfara, Kogi and other states when the country is not in a state of war.

The most unfortunate incidences that have attracted the attention of the international community to Nigeria for the wrong reasons are the recent killings in Plateau, Adamawa, Benue, Kaduna and Zamfara states among others. While the early morning attack on a Catholic Church in Benue where two Priests and 17 worshippers were killed is still fresh, an Assemblies of God’s Church pastor was killed with his family at Barakin Ladi, a Baptist Pastor and a Pastor’s son were killed, just to mention a few, give a religious coloration to the entire attack which is dangerous for inter-religious harmony in the country.
We also view these attacks as ethnic cleansing, land grabbing and forceful ejection of the native inhabitants from their ancestral land and heritage. What is happening to innocent citizens in Northern Nigeria and in particular Christians is a systemic genocide and must be stopped immediately.
Mr President, we reject the narrative that the attacks on communities in the north are “farmers/herdsmen clash.” How could a war on innocent communities be a ‘clash’ when one group is persistently the attacker, killer, maiming and destroying hapless groups; and the other is regrettably being killed, mutilated with places of worship destroyed?
Why are the attacks and killings not only on the farm but when people are sleeping at night or going about their businesses? How could it be a ‘clash’ when the herdsmen are hunting farmers in their own villages/communities while the farmers simply run for their lives?
How can it be a ‘clash’ when the herdsmen are the predators and the inhabitant/indigenous farmers are the prey? Until we call a disease by its real name and causatives, it would be difficult to correctly diagnose it for the right curative medications.
It is as a result of the foregoing that we hereby offer the following prayers:

1. That the security architecture of the country should be re-visited to give it a new lease of life and responsiveness to earn the required trust, confidence, and support of the general populace.
2. All communities ravaged by the herdsmen violence in the North should be rebuilt and adequate security be put in place to enable displaced persons to return to their homes and means of livelihood.
3. The Federal Government should roll out a robust advocacy programme to enlighten the nomadic herders on modern cattle rearing against open grazing and roaming across states and national boundaries.
4. The federal government should encourage herders to acquire land for cattle ranching across the country as a means of private business investment.

5. While the Federal Government under the current administration is celebrating an agricultural revolution, most farmers, especially in the north, can no longer go to their farms due to the sustained attacks by armed herdsmen. We, therefore, urge the government to reconcile its priority by providing the necessary safety for the farmers to go on with their farming activities.
6. We observe that the continuous abduction of underaged Christian girls who are forcefully converted to Islamic religion and given out for marriage without the consent of their parents breeds religious disharmony.
We, therefore, wish to state that the situation does not only violate the fundamental human rights of the girls but is also a call to anarchy if such actions were to get an even score by the Christian population. The appeal, therefore, is for your quick intervention to ensure that the numerous girls held under such circumstances are released to their parents.
7. In the spirit of the above observation, we wish to demand that intensive and speedy actions should be taken for the release of girls in captivity, especially Leah Sharibu.
8. That all perpetrators including the so-call foreigners as alleged of these heinous crimes against humanity in parts of northern states should be arrested and prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others.
9. The Federal Government should as a matter of urgency make adequate provisions for farmers who have been adversely affected by this undesirable herdsmen attacks.
10. We are appealing to Mr President to call on his colleagues in politics in respective of a political party to work together and make 2019 election to be free and fair and a model for all other African countries.
Conclusion
In conclusion, we want to appreciate Mr President once more for granting us an audience and for your attention. It is our sincere prayers that all will be well with Nigeria under your leadership, Amen!

CAN Declares 3 Days of Prayers and Fasting Over Unending Killings in Nigeria

...To hold peaceful protest nationwide on July 11
...Condemns Presidency on Forceful Seizure of  Land by Fulani

The leadership of the Christian Association pf Nigeria (CAN) has declared July 9-11, 2018 as NATIONAL DAYS OF PRAYERS AND FASTING AGAINST UNWARRANTED KILLINGS IN THE LAND and calls on all well-meaning Nigerians, both within and outside the country, to join Christians on 11 July, 2018 for a PEACEFUL PROTEST AGAINST THE KILLINGS.

CAN’s decision is hinged on willful and persistent killings of fellow citizens in general and Christians in particular nationwide and mostly in Plateau and Benue where mass burial has become the norm without any positive response from the country’s security agencies.

CAN is worried, disturbed and disappointed that despite all the clarion calls on President Muhammadu Buhari to re-organise his security team by replacing all the security chiefs, he has consistently turned a deaf ear to such calls. From all indications, the President seems to be satisfied with their poor performance and the attendant problems that have led to avoidable loss of lives and property.

We call on all Christians in the country and in the Diaspora to   participate in the three-day prayers and fasting programme for God to end all the senseless, unwarranted, and selected killings in the country. If the government has failed us, we are very sure that Our God will never fail.

All National Executive Committee's members of CAN, the Church and Denominational leaders have been invited to participate in a PEACEFUL PROTEST MARCH to both the National Assembly and the State House to impress on the government to see the need to effectively stop the unprecedented killings.

CAN has also directed its leadership at the state and local government levels to organise the same Peaceful Protest March to the Government House and the Local government headquarters respectively on 11 July. We are to tell the government; ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.
We appeal to our members to be law-abiding before, during and after the protest.
Meanwhile, we express our disappointment to the ungodly and unlawful counsel of the Presidency for people living under the threat of the Fulani herdsmen  to give away their land or face death. This position is reprehensible, satanic, wicked and it shows how serious the government is to the protection of lives and property of the citizens.

The only time such a directive was given was during the tyrannical leadership of Ahab when he killed Naboth who refused to let go of his inherited land to the greedy, wicked and the ungodly king. Although he succeeded in killing Naboth, but the wrath of God did not spare his family despite his remorsefulness.

We call on all well-meaning Nigeria to rise up and speak against such a position. Those who use violence to take away what belongs to others are unfit to be called humans. It is worrisome that we have a government that has come out clearly to state that people under the threat of herdsmen’s killings must surrender their lands for ranching or continue to be killed.

REST AND RECEIVE YOUR MIRACLE
In the healing of the paralyzed man at the pool of Bethesda (John 5:1–16), Jesus knew that for 38 years, the man had been flat on his back, unable to do anything for himself or others, no matter how hard he struggled.

In the case of the woman oppressed with a spirit of infirmity (Luke 13:10–13), Jesus knew that the woman had been bowed over for 18 years. And in that condition, she saw very little that was beautiful in life, only the dusty ground, dirty sandals and bruised feet.

What about the man with a withered hand? (Luke 6:6–10) Jesus knew from His carpenter days how a useless hand could have easily given the man a very poor sense of self-worth.

I believe that all three of them must have struggled for so long to get back on their feet, to try to lift themselves up, to attempt to do something about their situations, only to be disappointed each time they failed. In fact, they got so frustrated with striving to get better that by the time they met Jesus, they had probably given up trying to change their situations.

It was then that Jesus came and extended His offer to turn their situations around. And when they embraced His offer, they received the miracles that they had sought for so long.

You too may have been struggling to get back on your feet, or to lift yourself out of the problem that has sorely weighed you down. You have attempted to do whatever you could, hoping that it would amount to something, but you have been frustrated time and again. My friend, God wants you to cease from all your struggling and accept the offer He extends to turn your situation around.

It is no coincidence that all three of them received their miracles on the Sabbath, the day of rest for the Jews. God’s Word says, “There remains therefore a rest for the people of God.” The day you cease from your own laboring and striving, and rest in the finished work of Christ, is the day you receive your miracle.

Jesus has done all the work. Whatever you need has been provided for at the cross. So just be at rest and receive your miracle!

Program your mind with the Word of God. The Word is spirit and it is life. When your mind is totally saturated with the Word of God, your will becomes strong to exercise authority to overcome every ungodly thought and evil habit.

Don't let Satan deceive you into sacrificing the glory of God in your life for a few moments of self-indulgence and sin. Restrain your thought life. Meditate the Word instead of selfish, carnal thoughts. Keep your eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of your faith.

Buhari Government Is a Monumental Disaster - R-APC

PRESS CONFERENCE ADDRESSED BY ALHAJI BUBA GALADIMA, NATIONAL CHAIRMAN, REFORMED - ALL PROGRESSIVES CONGRESS (R-APC) AT SHERATON HOTELS ABUJA ON 4TH JULY, 2018

We are here assembled to address you on the state of our party, the APC, the state of the nation and the future of our experiment in constitutional democracy, in Nigeria.

2. You will recall that in the build up to the 2015 General elections, some political parties and groups came together, and formed a brand new political party, the All Progressives Congress, APC. This merger was based on the strong belief that Nigeria had come of age, but was severely underperforming and unable to meet its potentials for good governance. The Nigerian people entrusted power to the APC based on its promises and potentials.

3. We are sad to report that after more than three years of governance, our hopes have been betrayed, our expectations completely dashed. The APC has run a rudderless, inept and incompetent government that has failed to deliver good governance to the Nigerian people. It has rather imposed dictatorship, impunity, abuse of power, complete abdication of constitutional and statutory responsibilities, infidelity to the rule of law and constitutionalism. It has failed to ensure the security and welfare of our people and elevated nepotism to unacceptable height. The APC has failed to deliver on its key promises to the nation. There is no evidence of any  political will to reverse the decline of our party, while leaders who have created these circumstances continue to behave as if Nigerians owe our party votes as a matter of right.

4. The APC government, has been a monumental disaster, even worse than the government it replaced. The political party that was a vehicle for enthroning the government was rendered powerless by manipulations and complete lack of due process in its operations.

5. The last straw, was the Congresses and Convention of the APC held recently. The Congresses were intensely disputed as it was conducted with impunity, total disregard for due process, disregard for the party Constitution and naked display of power and practices that have no place in a party we all worked the very hard to put in place.

6. There are countless cases in courts all over the country challenging the legality of congresses and even the National Convention itself. It is very likely that the judicial decisions on these cases will result in massive chaos, confusion and uncertainties.The fate of a party in this state with a few months to the elections is best left to the imagination, but it is not a fate we believe our millions of members should be abandoned to.There were parallel congresses in 24 States namely: Abia, Adamawa, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Enugu, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Niger, Ondo, Oyo, Rivers, Sokoto and Zamfara.

These congresses in Wards, Local Government Areas and States all over the federation produced different sets of delegates. We therefore had an unfortunate situation where the party has been seriously factionalised and divided in not just 24 States but the 36 States and Abuja FCT.

7. The so-called National Convention of the APC was even worse. The National Convention of the party was ridiculed with constitutional infirmities that were so glaring and obvious that no fair minded person can claim that a legitimate and lawful executive emerged from that process. The Chairman of the organising Committee, Jigawa State Governor, His Excellency, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, declared 18 seats unopposed and uncontested, since only one valid candidate stood at the end of the grossly manipulated nomination exercise for each of the offices. He therefore proceeded to declare them duly elected in flagrant abuse and violence to the Constitution of the APC.

Indeed, Article 20 of the APC Constitution is very clear and explicit. It envisages a situation where if at the close of nomination, only one person is nominated, the Convention must vote “Yes” or “No”, for each candidate before he is declared duly elected. For the avoidance of doubt, let us re-produce the article verbatim:

Article 20 (1) of the APC Constitution states “Unless otherwise provided for: All party posts prescribed or implied by this Constitution shall be filled by democratically conducted elections at the respective National Convention or Congress subject, where possible, to consensus, Provided that where a Candidate has emerged by consensus for an elective position, a vote of “Yes” or “No” by ballot or voice shall be called, to ensure that it was not an imposition which could breed discontent and crisis”.

We all witnessed on live television and at the venue, Eagles Square Abuja, that the Convention Chairman, only put the “Yes” question to all the delegates, using words to the effect: Do you affirm? Do you agree? There was no opportunity whatsoever given to the delegates to say whether they are voting “No” for any candidate as the “No” question was never put to them.

It may well be that it the convention Chairman put the “No” Question, the voice vote for the “Noes”, may have been more. We will never know, since it was never done, contrary to the express provisions of the APC Constitution. It is therefore unquestionably clear that the 18 officers of APC that was “Elected” through this process could not have been duly elected. This constitutional vice infected the offices of:
1. Comrade Adams Oshiomhole   - National Chairman
2. Mai Mala Buni  - National Secretary
3. Alhaji Ibrahim Masari  -  National Welfare Secretary
4. Tunde Bello   -  National Financial Secretary
5. Babatunde Ogala  - National Legal  Adviser
6. Bankole Oluwajana – National Vice Chairman (South West)
7. Dr. Zakari Mohammed   - Zonal Secretary (North Central)
8. Abubakar Sadiq – Zonal Secretary (North East)
9. Hassana Abdullahi – Zonal Woman Leader (North Central)
10. Nelson Abba  - Ex-officio (North-Central)
11. Isa Azare - Ex-officio (North-East)
12. Tukur Gusau – Zonal Secretary (North West)
13. Nasiru Haladu - Ex-officio (North-West)
14. Rachael Akpabio – Zonal Woman Leader (South South)
15. Misbahu L. Didi – Representative of the physically challenged
and others.

8. Even before these illegal exercises that have alienated millions of members, there has been widespread disenchantment with the manner the party has been run, and the conduct and performance of our governments.      The nPDP, a group that has made a major contribution to the emergence of the APC administration has made strenuous efforts to invite attention to inequities, injustice and poor management  in our party without any success.The nPDP had shown good faith and commitment to the party, but it has been rewarded with indifference and even contempt.It is obvious that the leadership of the APC has decided to shut out members of the APC, as well as other members who have raised genuine grievances and a desire to improve the responsiveness of the APC to the desire of members for a party founded on democratic principles.

9. Under the circumstances, patriotic elements and most of the original founders of the APC have found themselves in the opposing side of this charade. Most of the delegates who bought and paid for forms for the congresses and convention and were elected as delegates have come together to take control and give legitimacy to APC to be now known as and called REFORMED-APC (R-APC).

The R-APC as constituted have officers in all the wards, 774 Local Governments, and all the 36 States of the Federation including the FCT.

The R-APC also have National Executive Committee, the National Working Committee and other organs of the Party are properly constituted and functional.

Nigeria faces an existential threat arising from three years of near destruction of this country and the exacerbation of our ethnic, religious and divisive cleavages. We will in concert with others offer real change to Nigeria. Not fake change. It is clear that our party needs a leadership that will live by its founding ideals.We have therefore decided to legitimately lead those members to work  to rebuild our nation more firmly on genuine democratic principles, to enshrine good governance and restore the faith of Nigerians in the possibility of the existence of a prosperous, secure and peaceful nation

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says it has uncovered a grand design by leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and a cabal to siphon the repatriated $322 million (about N115 billion), under the cover of sharing the money to the poor in 19 states.

The party said its investigations show that out of the estimated 300,000 households listed as beneficiaries, more than 90 percent are phony family names supplied by fraudulent government officials, as conduit to channel the repatriated money to APC leaders and the cabal.

Further investigation revealed that the cabal is responsible for the stampede to spend the money without recourse to the constitutionally required approval and appropriation of the National Assembly.

It is more shocking to note that President Muhammadu Buhari, who is regularly availed of information, particularly on corruption issues, approved the dispensing of the money, without the required legislative due diligence process, thereby opening the vaults for looters in the APC.

While the PDP has nothing against any genuine plan to benefit Nigerians in anyway, we believe that President Buhari is aware of the requirements of the constitution regarding the disbursement of funds belonging to the federation and we urge Nigerians to hold him responsible for this wicked plot by APC interests to use innocent citizens as cover to loot the repatriated fund.

The PDP therefore calls on the National Assembly to protect the interest of Nigerians by immediately employing its legislative instruments to stop the re-looting of the repatriated money.
